Friday the Thirteenth, to Spook or to Savor?

Happy Friday the 13th! It feels just like any other day, but there are people who are deathly afraid of the date. They have “Friggatriskaidekaphobia,” also known as “paraskevidekatriaphobia.” In fact, 21 million Americans suffer from this fear. Frigga comes from the Scandinavian love goddess who was worshipped on the sixth day of the week—Friday. Medieval Christians believed that Frigga was a witch, and Friday became the witch’s day. Unfortunately for Friday, it was also the day of the crucifixion. There were thirteen guests at the Last Supper, the thirteenth being the traitor Judas. Between the bad luck associated with Friday and the number thirteen, Friday the 13th formed quite the bad reputation.

What happens if your due date is Friday the 13th? Or, what if your baby is born on Friday the 13th? Unless you have friggatriskaidekaphobia, not much at all! It’s certainly not a hospital holiday, and lots of awesome people were born on Friday the 13th. Check out the long list of celebrities at the end of this blog post that includes the Olsen twins and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. There is one notable death, that of Tupac Shakur in 1996. The same number of people are born on Friday 13th as other days.

Here is some more good news about Friday the 13th. Reuters reported that Friday the 13th is actually a safer day than average. There are fewer than average accidents, fires, and thefts. Friday is, however, often bad news for the stock market. The infamous Black Friday in 1869 was caused by speculators interfering with the price of gold on the New York Gold Exchange. A second Black Friday crashed the stock market on October 13, 1989 after a multi-billion dollar buyout for United Airlines’ parent company fell apart. Most recently, Friday June 12, 2015 brought the Chinese stock market crash when the Shanghai index lost a third of its value.

Fingers crossed that this Friday the 13th brings about an especially safe day with no stock market crashes and lots of adorable Friday the 13th babies, like these celebrities.
